The Energy Audit Process

Step 1 - The Inspection

I will collect data on your heating system, air conditioning system, windows, doors, plumbing system, insulation, and appliances. I will also do an infrared scan to identify where air leaks are and review the proper way to repair them. In addition to finding the air leaks the infrared camera helps us identify if there is insulation present, if it is correctly installed, and how affectively it is insulating your home.

While doing your inspection I will go over my findings with you and go over the proper way to repair the problems I find. I will also give you documentation on energy upgrades and some basics on how to keep your energy bills down. Making these minor changes will help you recoup the cost of your Energy Audit before you know it! This documentation is yours to keep and we encourage you to share it with your friends, family, and neighbors.

By the time we are done every energy saving opportunity that exists in your home will be identified and reviewed.

Step 2 - The Detailed Analysis

The data collected while inspecting your house will be inputted into an Energy Audit program that analyzes your house. The report will make recommendations regarding your home's insulation, windows, heating system, air conditioner, and your water heater. It also identifies whether new appliances can save you money. All energy efficient opportunities covered by this program will be explained and listed in a table that is prioritized in terms of cost-effectiveness. The approximate cost of installing upgrades and more importantly, the projected savings from those measures is also detailed. This way, you'll know what to install and how soon it will pay for itself.

As part of your Energy Audit you will also get a list of repair items that are not coved by the Energy Tune-Up program. We will review these energy saving opportunities while inspecting your home. Being we go over so much information this list serves as a reminder of what needs to be done.

Your report will also include infrared photos of problematic exterior doors and up to five additional infrared photos. If you would like an extensive infrared report let us know prior to starting the inspection and we will review any additional charges.

Step 3 - Implementing the Changes

The report provides access to a database of contractors, access to information on other energy saving products, and makes you aware of other services that are available. Finding a good contractor is hard to do. Depending on where you live we may be able to refer you to a specialist.

Local utilities may offer rebates on appliances, heating systems, AC systems, water heaters, and programmable thermostats. Please contact your local utility company for information on these programs before upgrading.

Step 4 - Financing Your Upgrades?

The report lists the improvements that, when financed, will save more than they cost. It also includes information on the "Streamlined Limited Repair Program" by which homebuyers and homeowners can finance up to an additional $35,000 on their mortgage for energy-efficient improvements.
